About the Club
We welcome new members of all abilities from newcomers and novices to master modelmakers. Founded in 1971, we have a diverse membership with a common interest in all things railway. Members model across a range of scales and gauges, eras and countries. Bring along your own modelling projects or work on the club project layouts – currently, Okehampton (O gauge, SR/BR, 1948-55) and Aylesbury Town (P4 gauge, 1950s/60s). Or share knowledge and experience of the real thing.

The club meets on Friday evenings at 7pm till 10pm at the St Mary's Church Hall in Princes Risborough. This is located opposite St Mary's Church and near the main car park in Stratton Road.  The club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2021, but sadly could not celebrate it in style. We hope to be able to do this when the risks reduce to an acceptable level.

The club have an established history of building entertaining layouts. These have included: Addison Park, Chiltern Road, Radmore, Chiltern Parkway and New Mills, however, we do not rely solely on past successes and we have a number of layout projects under construction in 'O' and P4. We are custodians of the iconic Aylesbury LNWR (High Street) layout which faithfully reproduces the original station as it was circa1910. When exhibited it has generated a lot of interest, not just in the exquisite modelling but in the history of the railway, local industries (e.g. ducks, osier!) and the development of the town.

Rossiter Rise by Terry Tew.
Set in North London this 00 gauge layout has detailed interior section of an engine shed as well as lots of operational interest. A BR built Class 501 three car unit eases into the main line platforms at Rossiter Rise alongside a pair of Q Stock vehicles on the London Transport line. (pictured above left) The background has been built up to suggest distance in this compact scene. This layout featured in Hornby Magazine in September last year. Rossiter Rise is a fictitious through station set somewhere in North West London during the mid-late 1950s.

The layout consists of a main scenic section placed centrally with a traverser storage yard to the left and a second off-scene yard to the right. This section also has scenic interest in front with the interior of a London Transport (LT) works portrayed. At the front of the main scenic section is a small LT depot with two tracks leading into the works plus a head shunt leading to a single road steam shed. Directly behind this is a London Underground bay terminus platform. Then there is a pair of through tracks constructed as four-rail DC in the style of LT and the North London Line. Finally, at the back, is a through bay platform which is non-electrified.

Cobra Canyon By Riley Barnes.
Cobra Canyon is an American N gauge layout built by John Parkinson of wales but was given to the current owner Riley Barnes with the hope to inspire him to build his own layouts. It is a highly detailed model of a stereotypical Wild West scene, it was seen on the tv program “Hornby: A model world” in November of 2021.

North Barneston By Riley Barnes.
North Barneston is a fictional maintenance depot built by Riley Barnes for the tv program “Hornby: a model world”. It uses techniques learnt by studying his other layout “Cobra canyon”. The TMD and running lines are fictitious but is based on an area in the Leeds and Manchester area in the late 2010s

Moos by Mike Roualle
Was featured in Continental Modeller November 2020.
This is the first show outing for Moos. Location is Weinviertel in Lower Austria – through junction station, located on a subsidiary line running from Zwettl to Horn, the standard gauge branch heading to Huf. The narrow gauge heading South to Krumau am Kamp. Whilst the main running line is electrified both the narrow gauge and the branch are not relying on diesel and some steam traction.

The narrow gauge merges in the station area using Tillig dual gauge trackwork. The era modelled is from the late 1970’s onwards- This allows a flexibility in the range of rolling stock, so that some interesting items may appear from time to time.

00 Gauge layout there is a central back-scene running the length of the layout dividing it into two 8’x2’ halves. One side is a country station; the other is a town station.

County School Station By Ollie Simons is attending its first exhibition.
Based on a rural junction station that serves the village of North Elmham. The station included 2 through platforms as well as a bay platform and run-around loop in the adjacent siding. The layout has been recreated as closely as possible to the real location while still in service in the late 1950s. This includes some complex point work and some beautiful scenery. The layout is a DCC sound fitted system including both loco sounds and ambient noises with working signals and lighting. The layout also features stunning custom built buildings

O Gauge Shunting Puzzle By R&DMRC.
Conversation among members occasionally turned to the possibility of the Club building a second, smaller, gauge 0 layout that could be transported relatively easily and exhibited at smaller exhibitions such as 'Risex'. A dockside scene was one idea mooted, but the concept took on a practical form when it was suggested that a 'shunting puzzle' would be a good choice.

All being well this will be the Kendal MRC 2022 Annual Exhibition, with many of the traders and layouts carried over from the cancelled 2021 show with a number of new layouts and traders to replace those unable to attend. 

As with many events at this time of the year the rules might change at short notice with regards to attendance and rules, so far as we publish this the Uk Government have NOT issued further restrictions. "At this point we are hoping to be able to run the show as we usually do, but we will of course be guided by government policy and Covid safety requirements at the time. We will have wider aisles and hand sanitiser available".

Rushen Valley Railway - O Gauge Preserved Railway. The clubs own modular O gauge layout which usually depicts a preserved railway. It can be exhibited as separate layouts -  Maidenhaiste Station and Broadhurst Works - or joined together, with additional scenic boards, to become the Rushen Valley Railway.

Harkness - by Tony Bucknell. An EM gauge layout based on a private railway in Northumberland 1930s to 1950s. The Belford Budle and Harkness Railway was a private light railway joining the LNER East Coast Mainline at Belford to the small harbour at Harkness on Budle bay. It is based on the North Sunderland Railway which ran between Chathill and Seahouses. We run two periods, 1939 (LNER), 1949 (early British Railways) and will add a third 1959 (BR) in due course, all with representative locos and stock.

Hartburn - EM gauge Northumberland, Hartburn is a small village in Northumberland (pictured above). It was never served directly by rail but lay just north of the old Wansbeck Valley Railway from Morpeth to Redesmouth, with the nearest station being Angerton. However, the original plan put forward in 1855 to link Morpeth and Rothbury proposed a line running via Meldon, Hartburn and Longwitton.

Furka Oberalp - HOm Swiss metre gauge, set somewhere on the Swiss Furka Oberalp Bahn, between Andermatt and Disentis, the layout features working rack and pinion operation allowing the train to climb approximately 3 feet as they wind their way around the layout, with up and down passenger trains passing each other at the small station, which is served by a funicular railway.

Solrail Ltd a not for profit company holds the Workington Exhibition in the Energus building at Lillyhall, between Whitehaven and Workington and will be there again this year. It has to be seen to be believed! Light and airy with lots of natural lighting it makes for a pleasant experience. There is a bus service on the Saturday that stops outside the door from both Workington and Whitehaven. Easy to park. Easy to access and all on one level! Fresh meals available. Excellent toilet facilities.

Please be aware this event will run subject to Covid restrictions in place at the time. This means that we may have to cancel at short notice. If you are not well or have been told to isolate you should NOT attend.

Covid 19 saw the 2020 exhibition cancelled. Fortunately most of the exhibitors have agreed to attend this year with a couple coming next year instead. We hope you will make the effort to attend as so many of us have missed seeing you and showing you what we have been doing. Another very successful event was held in 2019 so we have decided to do it all again. The list is just about sorted, subject to something happening. Already the initial layout list has been amended a number of times but we have an excellent selection again. Nearly all are new to Workington so local people can expect to see some wonderful models. Port Solway in S4 will be making a special visit for the very first time. It features Maryport & Carlisle Railway stock alongside North Eastern ones. There is also a model based on Cockermouth and one on Maryport. Those of you that travel from a distance can expect a warm welcome and the café will be open for bacon butties to start the day then a full lunchtime menu with hot and cold meals available. Something for everyone is our mantra and we think we have done it again.

The Workington model railway exhibition is very much a family show. We try hard to encourage family visitors and particularly young modellers of the future which is why we do not charge an entry fee for accompanied children.

Upper Cwmmywych (N Gauge) - 4' x 1'6 - Les Nehrlich returns with another of his superb layouts which is a small depot for emergency servicing and refuelling of diesel locos.

Maryport (N Gauge) - 8' x 3' - Solrail member William Moon brings his interpretation as to what Maryport could have looked like, inspired by childhood memories of train watching around Netherton!

Wulstanton Road (N Gauge) - 8' x 2'6 - Terry Tasker from Southport Model Railway Club makes another visit with a small but busy British N Scale layout is roughly only 8ft in length and is a perfect example of what you can make do with limited space, with a small commuter terminus station serving a large metropolis.

Port Solway (S4) - 31' x 5' - Newcastle MRC - Nearly all scratch built. (pictured above) Newcastle Model Railway club exhibiting their portrayal of what might have been if the North Eastern Railway had united with the Maryport and Carlisle Railway early in the 20th Century.

Cockermouth [Covid 19] (OO Gauge) - Andrew Holland - 12'6 x 2' - Shortly before closure with a few goods trains to add interest, built during lockdown with a lot of recycling from older layouts.

South Galleons (OO Gauge) - 7'x1' - Solrail member Ian Blenkinsop, having provided the club with demonstrations for several years he has decided to bring one of his layouts for you to enjoy. A pastiche of Deptford in the 1950s this is a superbly detailed compact industrial layout. (pictured right)

Franklin Falls (HO Gauge American) - 4' x 1' - Ray O'Neill the layout is based on the former Boston & Maine (Ex Tilton & Franklin RR) branch line to Franklin Falls NH, now operated by New England Southern RR, featuring sound equipped, heritage diesel power.

Ellasweet Beet Factory (OO Gauge) - 7' x 2' - Graham Morfoot - Sugar beet production facility the processing factory is situated in south Lincolnshire in the heart of the beet growing area. (pictured left) A representation of a sugar beet factory in East Anglia around 1960. With an eclectic mix of industrial steam and diesel locomotives linking the factory to the local British Railways network. Graham depicts wagon loads of limestone, coal, materials and sugar beet (modelled in a very innovative way).

Scratchy Bottom (O Gauge) - 22' x 2' Marc Dobson - Yes the name is correct and it does exist. Ask for an explanation!

The society is looking forward to belatedly celebrating their 50th anniversary (+1) this year by returning once more to the fantastic fully accessible venue to offer a great variety of interesting layouts, railway societies and a selection of quality trade support. Situated close to the A2, Ebbsfleet station and Bluewater, the venue has: Free on-Site parking, a regular bus service that stops outside, wheelchair access and the usual friendly atmosphere.

Members are happy to assist those who need assistance and answer enquiries about the Show or Society. Children (Under 16) accompanied by an adult will continue to join us for FREE. That means one adult can bring several children with them and only pay five pounds!

Subject to prevailing conditions, hope to offer an extensive range of hot and cold food and refreshments. Plus on Sunday we will aim to serve roast dinners with all the trimmings between 12-2pm; Beef, Turkey plus a vegetarian option.

How to find Northfleet School For Girls;

Ebbsfleet railway station is only 17 minutes from Central London, 10 minutes from Stratford International and Gravesend railway station is 11 minutes from Dartford. Northfleet School for Girls is about 2-3 minutes drive from the Northfleet turn-Off from the A2.

Bus routes 481 & 483 serve Gravesend town centre, Ebbsfleet station and Bluewater shopping centre and stop outside the school on both days. Other regular bus services stop near to Northfleet School for Girls. As last year, anyone who presents their Arriva bus ticket to the pay desk can obtain a free tea/coffee/cold drink.

A variety of layouts and gauges from N through to O covering various locations and themes including Grantham (OO) and our new layout Plymouth Friary Shed (O gauge). Trade support and excellent refreshments too, also with free car parking within the school. Entry is subject to Government Covid Regulations at the time of the show. Plenty of room with wide gangways in the main hall, children go free with every paying adult.

Plymouth Friary Engine Shed - BR engine shed, Plymouth Friary is the Southern Railways engine shed in Plymouth. The Leeds MRS started construction of an O Gauge model in 2017

Maristow - GWR early 1900s (pictured above)
Belbroughton - BR branch line West Midlands, set in the late 1950’s, Belbroughton in North Worcestershire is village in an area bounded by Kidderminster, Bromsgrove, Longbridge and Stourbridge. In real life the village never had a railway but this is what could have been if the LMS and GWR had built a line into the town. The line in from Kidderminster fights the contours of the region causing it to enter the station via a rather circuitous route, whereas the line from the LMS at Longbridge takes a shorter route to Belbroughton coming off the Halesowen branch at Rubery.

A weekend not to miss 18 layouts from narrow gauge to O Gauge. Continental, American and for certain UK outline both Diesel and Steam. All displayed in the Darlington Railway Museum. The museum has a large car park. Disabled parking is available and the museum is wheel chair friendly. The museums exhibits are housed in the original Darlington Station on the Stockton to Darlington Railway and form part of the exhibition. With several historic locomotives on display.

This year there are a plethora of layouts across all major scales will be on show which cover most area of railway modelling. The show is held in the Darlington Railway Museum which is housed in the original Darlington Station.

Woodside [OO Gauge BR].
Sets out to capture the distinctive ‘sense of place’ that defined the Forest of Dean in the 1950s and 1960s. Also captures the seasonal atmosphere where some of the materials and colours used to represent autumnal vegetation rarely feature on layouts. 'Woodside' is a split-level layout combining visual interest with operating potential, the passenger services operate on the higher level; freight below.
Thorncliffe OO Gauge. Based in north Sheffield, a variable period between 1988 and 1992.

Neuburg 1913 (Electric Traction) Swiss HO. (pictured left) This is a Swiss metre gauge layout of the Rhätische Bahn, Neuburg station in 1913, a section of the line prior to electrification. Layout features a passing station with engine facilities in a scenic setting. The layout is featured in the Peco Modellers Library, modelling Swiss Railways and Continental Modeller November 2020.

Byway MPD OO Gauge BR urban loco shed. 4' 6" x 1' - A fictional small BR urban motive power depot set in the late steam era. The layout is used at shows to demonstrate sound equipped locos.

Chester's Yard EM Gauge Period Late 1970's, by Robin Coulthard. Chesters Yard is a completely fictitious location loosely based around the late 1970s Blue Diesel era and is a first attempt at finescale modelling in ‘EM’ by the owner. Motive power is supplied by a mixture of Class 24, 25, 26, 35 and 128 DPU from Bachmann and Heljan and all but two at present are sound fitted.

Kyle of Mac Callen EM Locomotive Shed BR by Adrian Walby. Circa September 1966, at the locomotive shed at Kyle of Macallan, somewhere in the north-west Highlands of Scotland (pictured right). Steam has long gone from the area, last seen here in June 1962 and, where the steam locomotives were once serviced, diesels now rest between duties, though not for much longer as the writing is on the wall for this somewhat derelict shed. The layout is based on, but not an exact copy of, the shed at Kyle-of-Localsh and coincidentally, the shed lost its roof in a fire shortly after the end of steam, remarkably similar to events at Kyle-of-Localsh.

SPA VALLEY RAILWAY SERVICE

The heritage railway will be operating a two train service using 'Sir Keith Park', 'Douglas' and visiting Class 33/0 33002 'Sea King'. Trains will operate from 10:30 to 17:30 on both days of the event with evening Fish & Chip trains on Saturday 11th September. Trains will call at High Rocks & Groombridge throughout the day as they operate between Tunbridge Wells West and Eridge.

Bournville Model Railway Club are pleased to announce their first exhibition at this new venue which offers a larger, disabled friendly indoor space. Ample free parking with disabled spaces and excellent public transport links with buses and trains, all within easy walking distance. Hot and cold food available and a licenced public bar for refreshments.

Arley [N Gauge] A layout that has been displayed on the Severn Valley Railway itself and has model buildings which are lovingly created to represent the station as seen today on the Seven Valley Railway today. 

Bournville Engine Shed
[N Gauge] From the host society, The Bournville Engine Shed layout is based upon period signalling diagrams and Ordnance Survey maps to provide an authentic track layout that allows us to run trains from the period 1939 to closure in 1960. Travelling from Birmingham trains enter the layout by emerging from Church Road tunnel and run alongside the Worcester & Birmingham canal until they pass under Mary Vale Road. With Mary Vale Road passed, the shed and coaling stage dominate the scene as trains ease towards the bridge at Cotteridge Park before passing out of sight beneath the Pershore Road. The layout is currently very much a work in progress.

Beacon Point
A disused military narrow gauge railway in 009, including a display of sound mirrors on the Beacon Point model railway (see above). Has featured in both the Railway Modeller magazine, and at large exhibitions such as Warely. Some of the features could have been loosely based on the Romney - Dymchurch railway, beachside scenery, lighthouse, old wartime pillboxes.

Brynderi
Is a fictitious town on the Welsh borders (pictured above). The layout is in ‘N’ gauge and set sometime during the 1950s. It is a through station with a small branch line and a small goods yard. It is GWR mostly steam and some DMUs. Displayed by the Wyre Forest Model Railway Club.

Fair T'Middlin
A “OO” gauge layout set in an industrial area of the North of England during the 1950’s / 60’s. A fictional based diorama set around the town of ‘Eckerslike’ dominated by a viaduct and substantial industrial red brick buildings built in the Victorian era. The railway station was originally an intermediate station on the Fair to Middlin line. The railway line was, however, truncated at Eckerslike following closure of the mine at Middlin during the 1930’s.The railway nowadays is a branch line from Fair providing a regular passenger service between the two towns. There is also a busy goods shed serving local people and industry and a private siding to the large engineering works adjacent to the station with an active coal yard. BR steam locos as well as early green diesels and DMUs provide the motive power. Display by Wyre Forest Model Railway Club.
Hackworth
Yellowstone Ridge
The Burlington Northern Yellowstone Division is set in central and western North Dakota in the 1976-1980 timeframe. This was a time of transition for the BN, with carload shipments of grain giving way to unit trains, Powder River coal on a sharp rise, and the invasion of SD40-2’s while inherited power is parked and retired. 
Catfield
Norfolk's Model Railway Club, located in the village of Catfield were asked to produce a model of Catfield Railway Station and this OO Gauge display was the result. 
St Frazal D'Ardeche - by Piers Milne - Chemin de fer du Vivarais tourist line in 1:160 scale 6.5mm gauge (Continental Nm)

Awdrey St Nicholas
OO Gauge layout based around the Thomas stories, named after Rev W Awdry (pictured right). Layout named Awdry in memory of the man who first put pen to paper and St Nicolas is the name of the parish church of King’s Norton where he was based at the time. Designed to be operated by youngsters, the layout is 8ft square with the “fat controllers” at one end leaving the other three sides for the kids controllers on two or three of the other sides according to where the layout is situated.

Uffculme

This O Gauge layout is based on the station at Uffculme on the Culm Valley Light Railway. It also includes a bridge over the River Culm. The layout represents Uffculme as it was during the last years of passenger traffic . As the "Culm Valley Light Railway" only ran "one engine in steam" we have devised a non-prototypical timetable to give the viewers something more interesting to look at whilst still retaining the correct rolling stock. The layout was conceived late in 2012 realising that the 7th September 2013 commemorates 50 years since that last passenger train travelled along the line. 

Marklin Z Gauge

Just in case you thought N Gauge was small enough, try and get your fat fingers and bad eyesight onto Z Gauge ... speaking from a personal perspective here ... any model that fits neatly in a briefcase is fine by me, bring your magnifying glass though ;)

We are again holding our show at this great venue in Roade which is famous for its railway cutting. The hall is easy to find, has good free parking and easy access for all. Northampton MRC - Castle Station

(Pictured left) OO Gauge Layout of Northampton Castle station before the buildings were replaced in 1965. The layout is a scale model of Northampton’s Castle Station set in the 1930s. It shows the area between Westbridge and Spencer Bridge and features buildings that were replaced in 1965. What makes the model special is the quality of the modelling and the attention to detail. As well as researching the station history, this model is based on photographs and actual measurements of buildings that were taken before its demolition in 1965. 

Fenny Stratford
This OO Gauge Layout is an accurate representation of Fenny Stratford station in the 1950s and replicates the line from the Stag Road bridge, which carried the busy A5 over the Railway, to where the railway crosses the Grand Union Canal. Fenny Stratford is located just east of Bletchley and was part of the Varsity Line running between Oxford and Cambridge operated by the LMS. During the 1950s, the location had a double-track station, a number of sidings and a large active timber yard. During this period, the timetable was comprehensive, with a mixture of passenger and freight services.

Fleebight Wharf

O Gauge layout of a small and cramped service facility in the heart of London's dockland set in the period mid 50's to May 1970 when the P.L.A. ceased rail traffic in the Royal Docks. The steam shed and its service facilities have been demolished and a more modern structure provided. A sub shed of 30A Stratford it allows refuelling and minor repairs to be carried out on the diesel shunters that operated in the numerous yards and transfer sidings that abounded in that area. The only surviving building from the steam era is now situated outside the railway boundary and it has been sold or rented to other organisations

How to find us by road:
By road from M1

Take M1 junction 15 and follow signs for A508. Follow this road all the way into Roade. Enter Roade through a S bend and then take the first turning on the right BAILEY BROOKS LANE. This turning is signposted Village Hall / Tennis Club.

By road from A5
At the Old Stratford roundabout take the A508 signposted Northampton. Follow this road all the way into Roade. Drive through Roade, past the speed camera, and at the mini roundabout take the first exit (A508). Proceed along A508 until you see signpost Village Hall / Tennis Club. Turn left here into BAILEY BROOKS LANE.
