STEAM RAILTOURS - THE ROYAL DUCHY [Bristol Temple Meads - Plymouth - Par]

THE ROYAL DUCHY 2020

The Royal Duchy Railtour

Sunday 30th August 2020

These ever-popular summer day trips by steam train run from Bristol Temple Meads, out via Yatton, Taunton then into Devon and finally reaching Cornwall. The route includes travelling along the internationally famous sea wall at Dawlish, crossing Brunel’s famous Saltash Bridge into Cornwall, and some of the most varied and exciting scenery in the country. Passengers can choose to spend time in Plymouth or travel on to Par, where buses are provided for visits to Fowey or Charlestown. This train departs Bristol Temple Meads steam hauled by heritage steam locomotive No.46233 Duchess of Sutherland at around 08:45 and stops to pick up further passengers at Yatton and Taunton. Almost immediately on departure from Taunton, our steam locomotive will be working hard as it tackles the climb to Whiteball Summit. There is a further stop at Exeter St. David’s station for our locomotive to take on water and for more passengers to join the train. Departing Exeter and follow the Exe Estuary to the seaside. We then travel along the famous sea wall between Dawlish and Teignmouth, an experience not to be missed.
The Royal Duchy Railtour Bristol - ParAfter Newton Abbot, our steam locomotive will demonstrate her real strength as she powers up some of the steepest main line gradients in the country. First there is the difficult climb to the summit at Dainton Tunnel, followed by a dramatic drop down to Totnes, then an equally difficult climb up Rattery Bank before descending to Plymouth. Passengers have the option to alight at Plymouth or remain on the train to Par. There will be over five hours free time to explore the historic maritime city of Plymouth which includes the Hoe, the ancient Barbican and seafront areas, and the National Marine Aquarium. As we leave Plymouth, under diesel hauled power, and cross the river Tamar on Brunel’s masterpiece, the Royal Albert Bridge, to enter Cornwall. Our train continues through the magnificent Cornish countryside to Par, where there will be a break of more than three hours. Buses will take passengers from Par, at no extra charge, to visit either the picturesque seaside town of Fowey or the harbour village of Charlestown. The latter is a working port and home to the Shipwreck, Rescue and Heritage Centre. We shall leave Par steam hauled by Duchess of Sutherland at around 17:45 and stop at Plymouth to pick up those passengers who chose to alight there.  The train then returns to Bristol, stopping to set down passengers at Exeter, Taunton and Yatton en route.

Preservation History
Following withdrawal from regular service, 46233 was acquired by Butlins Heads-of-Ayr holiday camp, Scotland, in October 1964. It was later purchased by Bressingham Steam Museum. Then in 1996, 6233 was acquired by the Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust (PRCLT) with the intention of returning her to main line running and in 2001, No. 6233 returned to the national network after an overhaul assisted by the heritage lottery fund and match funded by the PRCLT.

On 6 March 2010, 6233 was rolled out in LMS lined black livery, which was retained during 2010, before a major overhaul, taking 6233 out of service for the 2011 season. Two years later now renumbered 46233 was rolled out in "authentic (Brunswick) green" livery, as used by British Railways during the early 1950s, at the Midland Railway - Butterley following a major overhaul. Most recently she has regained her original number "6233" and LMS "Crimson Lake" livery to mark its 80th birthday.

LOCAL MODEL RAILWAY CLUB INFO - STILL NO OPEN DAYS [AUGUST 2020]

As we've already mentioned in an earlier post there are still no signs that Model Railway Clubs will be hosting any Exhibitions or Open Days for at least another month or two, maybe even longer sadly. So while we have some time on our hands have been browsing some of the Model Railway Clubs in my area, some are quite local and a few I've personally attended, have always been well received, the Hillingdon Railway Modellers open days are certainly being missed as it's nice to get out and give Dads models a bit of a run, especially the O Gauge ones as I simply don't have the operating space.
Addison Road O Gauge Layout
Twickenham & District Model Railway Club
Meetings are held on Friday evenings from 19:30 to 22:30 at Kerswell Hall, Wills Crescent, Hounslow, Middlesex, TW3 2JF, with monthly workdays on a Saturday. They would normally have held their annual Open Day in July sadly had to miss that one.

The club has its main layouts in '0', '00', and 'N' Gauges, which are shown on the club website. The club's superb '0' Gauge exhibition layout, Addison Road, is set in the mid-1920s just after Grouping, and features trains arriving and passing through from Clapham Junction of the Southern Railway and its predecessors, as well as impressive hand-built working models of the former LNWR/LMS 'Oerlikon' 3-car EMUs in LNWR and LMS liveries.  One of the '00' Gauge layouts under construction, is a model based on the former LSWR/SR Station, Twickenham Junction, set in the BR(S) Region era around 1961, on the premise that the original Victorian station was not closed and demolished but replaced by the present BR-built station opened in 1954. The layout features the signature flyover, dating from 1883, as well as accurate models of the various buildings in and around the station, some of which still exist today. Other '00' layouts are Northwick, a south-western coastal terminus and Eastgate set somewhere south-east of Manchester. The 'N' Gauge layouts are Batty Moor, based on Blea Moor on the Settle and Carlisle Railway, and Milton, a simple freelance double-sided modular layout.
This was the final club/society that my late father was a full member of, so always highly regarded by us, usually meets on a Thursday evening in Yiewsley Baptist Church Hall in West Drayton every Thursday evening from 19:30 to 22:00. The hall is located at the intersection of Fairfield Road and Colham Avenue. West Drayton mainline station is a few minutes walk away.
Hillingdon Railway Modellers
We regularly publish their open days and exhibition layouts, which include their O Gauge "Grindley Brook" (pictured left and below), they are very knowledgeable people and always worth a visit to give the trains a decent run on their sizeable O Gauge test track. There are also layouts and test tracks available for OO and N modellers too and there is always a project on the go whatever your preference.

'N' Gauge only, but covers Continental and UK railways. The main object of the club is to play trains with friends - but it also provides an opportunity for enthusiasts of 'N' gauge model railways to meet and exchange experiences, information and ideas! Interests are wide ranging - steam, electric and diesel power, British and overseas. The club uses 'modular' layouts - members build sections at home that can be joined together into one larger layout. Many members have modular boards; most also have their own 'home' layout.

Orpington & District Model Railway Society
Founded in 1951 the Club has layouts in the following scales/gauges: 'O', 'O16.5', 'EM', 'OO', 'HO', and 'N'. One member has a two foot gauge in his paddock with a Simplex (working) and a Barclay steam engine (being rebuilt). The Club usually has an open day there each year.
There is a permanent clubhouse, built by the club, with layout room and library / tea-room (most important).
Orpington & District Model Railway Society
The EM layout is Admiralty Exchange Sidings, which is set in the Medway area of Kent, the layout represents the meeting point of a cross country line of the former South Eastern and Chatham Railway with a line serving a naval dry stores depot. Many of the members actively model Southern or its constituents/successors and several of the Society members are active at the Bluebell and KESR. Their next exhibition is on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th January 2021 at Pratts Bottom Village Hall, all subject to change given the unusual circumstances this year.

THE COTSWOLD VENTURER RAILTOUR - SATURDAY 22nd AUGUST 2020

LMS Princess Coronation Class No.46233 Duchess of Sutherland
THE COTSWOLD VENTURER
(LONDON PADDINGTON - WORCESTER)

Finally seem to be returning to heritage railtours with Steam Power and can enjoy this scenic rail tour through the beautiful Cotswold Hills. The destination is the cathedral city of Worcester, located on the banks of the River Severn and internationally famous as the home of Worcestershire Sauce. Travelling outward via the Golden Valley line through Stroud and Kemble and also return the same way, which will include the steep climb up to Sapperton tunnel. This steam hauled service leaves London Paddington at around 07:40 hauled by Princess Coronation Class steam locomotive No.46233 Duchess of Sutherland and heads down the ex-Great Western Railway (GWR) main line. Will be stopping at Slough, Reading and Didcot to pick up more passengers.

The journey continues through the Vale of White Horse to Swindon, where we take the Golden Valley line through Kemble and up the climb to Sapperton Tunnel. We bypass Gloucester and head northwards through Cheltenham to Abbotswood Junction, were we leave the main line to Birmingham and head for Worcester Shrub Hill. There will be more than three hours to explore the fine city of Worcester. The river Severn runs through the city and is overlooked by the 12th century Worcester Cathedral. The site of the final battle of the Civil War between Oliver Cromwell and King Charles II was here. It is also the home of Royal Worcester Porcelain, and the birthplace of the composer Sir Edward Elgar is nearby at Lower Broadheath.

Cotswold Venturer Railtour August 2020
Our steam hauled train leaves Worcester Shrub Hill in the late afternoon and returns to London via the Golden Valley line. We follow the former Great Western Railway route from Standish Junction and climb steadily through Stroud before the gradients increase dramatically to 1 in 74 at Chalford. We continue to climb through the Golden Valley at a gradient of 1 in 60 prior to entering Sapperton tunnel at the summit of the climb. On easier gradients, we descend through Kemble and onwards through Wiltshire to the former railway town of Swindon. Now retracing our earlier route through the Vale of White Horse back to Didcot and Reading. Our final part of the journey calls at Reading and Slough to set down before arriving back in London Paddington in the evening.
