HILLINGDON RAILWAY MODELLERS OPEN DAY -- SAT 29th OCTOBER

The next confirmed date for the hall is on Saturday 29th October, I will update when the others are confirmed but they tend to be every couple of months and there's usually another one shortly before Xmas.

Yiewsley Baptist Church
74 Colham Avenue
West Drayton
UB7 8HF

* the entrance is at the side of the church down a path and the doors at the end should be open, don't try and enter the main doors of the church.

These are excellent events laid on by the members of the society, but we must stress they are NOT exhibitions, but an Open Day to show off their various layouts and test tracks, and an opportunity to see many fine models running.

Visitors are more than welcome to bring their own stock and give them a run there is a small cover charge to contribute to the cost of the Church Hall and refreshments are on sale throughout the day.

Doors open from 10am and there's activity throughout the day until about 4pm.

Here's a few pictures from some of last years Open Days, though I personally tend to focus on the O Gauge test track there are also Test Tracks available for OO and N Gauge too.

People will bring a wide variety of stock to run, nearly all are kit built though and the skills / detail is incredible.

Everyone will get their turn I promise.

This picture gives a good idea of the size of the O Gauge test track, you can give your models a really good work out here.

This can also transform into an exhibition layout called Grindley Brook a scenic section replaces the long straight down the back.

At least 12 Working Layouts:
Ballyconnell Road - 3mm
Banbury - N
Bassett Lowke - 0
Beckwick - 00
Bodgers End - 0n16.5

Just to prove that 7mm scale railway modelling is possible in small spaces, Brian Cameron built Bodger’s End on a 4′ x 1′ board and that includes the fiddle yard, cunningly hidden behind the low-relief warehouse buildings.

Ebsworth Street - 00
Gravesdown South - 00
High Gables - N
Knuddelstein Station - N

Liss Forest Depot - 00

Based on the Longmoor Military Railway in early 1965. It is an imaginary small depot located on a spur behind Liss Forest Road station.

The story is that it was built around 1944 as an overflow for Palmers Ball sidings and is now used mainly to shunting training. That provides a ready excuse for spending all day moving wagons around without going anywhere.

Maxwell - N

About 20 layouts and 30 traders are expected so plenty to see across all scales and periods too, as well as many experts on hand if you have an questions or seeking advice.

Won't list all the layouts on show but here's a few to whet your appetite and hope you go and enjoy an excellent show, it's been going over 40 years so I suspect they know how to keep everyone entertained.

Clayton West (OO). The 3.5 miles long branch line to Clayton West (diverging from the Huddersfield – Sheffield line at Clayton West Junction) closed to traffic in 1983, with the closure of the associated colliery. Freight traffic, other than that associated with the colliery, had ceased nearly 20 years earlier.

This layout is based on a premise that government funding was made available to regenerate the area, resulting in a shopping village on the colliery site, new homes and businesses when the colliery closure was announced.

Orestone Quay (OO). The layout was built by the late John Lewis, who was at one time a prominent member of the Burgess Hill MRC. It is set “somewhere” on the south coast during the period 1935 to 1947.

There is a passing resemblance to Weymouth Quay. Trains make their way through the narrow streets, beside scratch built shops, to the main quayside, where several ships can be seen. There are three lines beside the quays where un/loading can take place.
