DAVE MARKWICK MEMORIAL TOUR
Saturday 6 April 2019
This is the first outing of 2019 is named to honour our colleague Dave Markwick who gave HDL a great deal of support over the last 32 years, and who passed away recently. You might have been served by him in our buffet car; he also volunteered much time and technical assistance since the very early days of our preservation activities.
This 232 mile outing begins with a run from Hastings up to London Charing Cross via Orpington. We then follow a varied itinerary via the Dartford Loop onto the Isle of Grain in the Thames estuary, and via Plumstead to visit the Angerstein Wharf terminal; you cannot join or leave the tour on either of these freight-only lines. Our return is via Bexleyheath to Charing Cross, and back to Hastings via Norwood Junction and Redhill. Our 6-coach restored train will pick up passengers at the stations shown below.
The train will be formed as shown below on departure from Hastings station, with Coach A leading. It will change direction at Charing Cross.
Coach A 60118 'Tunbridge Wells' Club Class DEMU motor coach
Coach B 60501 Club Class DEMU trailer
69337 Standard Class BIG buffet car
Coach C 70262 Standard Class CEP coach (Sold out)
Coach D 60529 Standard Class DEMU trailer
Coach E 60116 'Mountfield' Standard Class DEMU motor coach (Sold out)
As always, our train has a well-stocked buffet car selling hot & cold food and drink throughout the day at reasonable prices. A reduced Club Class service is available on this shortish trip: passengers are seated at tables, and the fare covers hot drinks plus a meal with wine at lunchtime. Club Class is available only to passengers travelling to Grain. Reduced fares apply to passengers travelling either between Hastings and London (Standard Class only), or London and Grain.
There are outline plans for rail-tours later in 2019 as follows:
- Saturday 11 May 2019 (date confirmed):
Railtour to Lowestoft in connection with the Trolleybus Event at Carlton Colville. An outline of possible itinerary looks like this: depart Hastings 07:30 and return 22:55; calls at stations via Tonbridge then Bromley South, Kensington (Olympia), and Stratford; sets down at Norwich, then Oulton Broad North, then Lowestoft (13:25 to 16:35). - Saturday 6 July 2019:
A railtour to Lydney and the Dean Forest Railway - A proposed railtour to Princes Risborough and Quainton Road: previously pencilled in for 17 August, but now seeking a date in September.
