LOCOMOTIVE
Originally numbered 4488, 60009 Union of South Africa was built for the LNER in 1937.

It was named after the then newly-formed Union of South Africa, although it had previously been allocated the name "Osprey" on 17 April 1937, when it came out of the paint shop on 29 June. "Osprey" name plates were fitted to the locomotive during the 1980s and early 1990s due to the politics of the time. Its name has since reverted to Union of South Africa. The works number of Union of South Africa was 1853; the plaques are located in the cab itself and not on the exterior cab sides as is the usual practice.

[This trip will be diesel hauled between Newport and Cardiff on the outward journey.]

Train should depart London Paddington approx 09.22 and arrive in Cardiff 13:58.
The return from Cardiff leaves around 16:40 and gets back into the capital 21:38.

Should allow for onward connections back home, there are additional stops on route at Reading, Slough and Swindon.

OPENING TIMES:

ADMISSION:
Adults £7.00      Children £3.00      Family £15.00

Welcome to the Hampton Court Model Railway Society's 28th model railway show, 'Tolworth Showtrain 2018', covers three halls of the Tolworth Recreation Centre and features 25 working layouts covering both a variety of scales, time-periods and locations, with superb modelling and entertaining operation, including one where children can drive the trains, along with comprehensive Trade support, including several new this year. There are also demonstrators who will give hands on tuition in modelling skills.

This is your opportunity to try your hand at something new, age will be no barrier to this, and you will probably have something to take away.  The show takes place on the centenary of the Armistice which ended the Great War and in recognition of this, a special feature this year is two layouts portraying the part played by railways on the Western Front during the conflict. The show's aim to provide entertainment for everyone, not just the dedicated enthusiast.

On SUNDAY one Child will be admitted FREE with every paying Adult. There is a free Bus link from Surbiton station which is served by South Western Railway services. The timetable will be available on the website in early October. Several TfL bus services stop within 10 minutes walk of the show. The show is fully accessible with everything being at ground level.

BLACKPOOL ILLUMINATIONS TOUR -- SATURDAY 3rd NOVEMBER 2018

Blackpool Illuminations 2018

This tour will visit the resort on the final Saturday night of the 2018 event. This is the one night in the illuminations season when the clocks have reverted to GMT, so sunset is nice and early at 16.35 and the lights come on at 17.00. This gives you plenty of time to see the illuminations and still get back home the same night. Our train takes us north via the West Coast Main Line, through the railway hub of Crewe to Preston where we veer left on to the newly electrified Fylde branch line. Look out for Blackpool Tower on the skyline before we make our final turn and pull into Blackpool North at 13.40 (confirmed time).

The station is an eight minute almost level walk from the promenade and North Pier. We will arrive at lunchtime, so you will have several hours to explore in daylight. Make sure you take a ride on the famous Blackpool Trams, running the whole length of the promenade and onward to the quiet seaside town of Fleetwood. There is of course no end of things to do in Blackpool itself. Stroll along the promenade and the town’s three piers, maybe ascending the iconic Blackpool Tower which offers fabulous views across the Fylde Coast and the Irish Sea. Then there’s all the fun of Blackpool Pleasure Beach and, nearby, the Pepsi-Max ‘Big One’ big dipper, just ideal for those who like to spend their hard earned cash being scared out of their wits. As five o’clock draws near the expectation mounts. First a few displays come alive, then some more and within minutes the ‘greatest free light show on earth’ is there to behold, some six miles long and comprising no fewer than one million bulbs.

Departure from Blackpool North will be at 20.12 (confirmed) and we retrace our outward route home. Because of the late return please do not plan on the basis of onward rail connections.

BLACKPOOL HERITAGE TRAM TOUR

Nearly all services on the Blackpool Tramway are nowadays operated by modern single-deck trams but a heritage fleet is retained as a reminder of the days when an enormous variety of traditional tramcars were the norm. During the Illuminations season they can still be found in traffic, but are usually confined only along a short central section of the route. We are pleased to be able to offer you a chance to ride all the way from North Pier heritage trams stop (a few hundred yards walk from Blackpool North station) to Fleetwood and back aboard a classic Blackpool double-deck ‘Balloon’ car (pictured). There will be a photo stop at Fleetwood itself and at one or two other points along the way, and the trip will conclude by running along the short branch to just outside Rigby Road Depot.

The timings of the tour will not be fixed until the train times are confirmed but we are looking at departing around 14.00 and concluding around 16.45, shortly before the Illuminations are switched on.
