Welcome to Rail Ex North East 2019 organised by the Blyth & Tyne Model Railway Society. As regular visitors to the exhibition will be aware, we have continuously been trying to improve the quality of the layouts which are on display each year. It is therefore pleasing to hear the comments from visitors' that it is something we have been accomplishing. Hopefully we have achieved the same standard or improved again this year.
There will be a large variety of layouts with a British theme and layouts from around the world ranging from N to O Gauge. Will feature the excellent Bridge at Remagen layout (picture top) an N Gauge German layout with the feature bridge the detail is very impressive. Hopefully they will cover an area that is of particular interest to you or show you something out of the ordinary that will inspire you in your latest modelling project. Naturally there are also a number of Demonstrations, covering most aspects of modelling. Also this year we have numerous layouts and demonstrations showing the latest technology in Model Railways kindly take your time to visit all parts of the Exhibition, and ask the exhibitors as many questions as you like. We also have a fine array of Local and National Trade support this year, supplying the railway modeller with just about everything they need, so please give them your support.
This year we have our usual Tombola event this way you get your prizes straight away. So please stop by admire the prizes and buy a ticket or two. There is also our usual stand of used magazines available for a donation and a club members second hand stand. Once again we hope you have an enjoyable time at the exhibition and we look forward to welcoming you to our venue. List of Layouts Attending:
009
Castle Caereinion - based on the Welshpool and Llanfair railway this is a new layout in 009 scale.
Ravenscar Pier - For this model tramway it was assumed that the Town was fully developed and that there was a sandy beach at the bottom of the cliffs. A water powered funicular cliff tramway was built to enable the townspeople and visitors to access the sea wall from the top of the cliffs. Ravenscar Pier still runs trams but they are either cable hauled or battery powered, so there is no overhead.
N Gauge
Barton Road 1969-72 BR(W) -- located in the north west area covering a period from 1965. Based on Barton Dock Road Trafford Park with a main line connection, as at Manchester International Freight Terminal (MIFT) exhibited by the Manchester Model Railway Society.
The Bridge at Remagen (Page top and left) -- An outstanding model and regular on the exhibition scene, the centre point of the layout is the Ludendorff Bridge that used to span the Rhine and made famous by being the first bridge over the Rhine captured by the Allied in 1945 The layout is set a bit earlier in the autumn of 1944 as the bridge defences were being built up in preparation of the Allied advance the wartime stock is exceptional as is the fine detail which continues to be added too and this shouldn't be missed.
2mm Finescale
Winston BR NER
HO Gauge
Broadford (right) HO Australian - is a multi track main line corridor, so running scale length trains was able to be enjoyed. It is set in the 1985-86 period, and is a copy of the actual location.
Derby Freemo American - The layout has been designed using a modular concept providing the scope to display several different scenes even while some modules are still under construction. The desert scenes are inspired by the UP and BNSF trans-continental routes in Utah, Nevada and Arizona.
Em - P4 - S4.
Clackmannen Goods 1970s (BR Sc) - The scene is set in the twilight months of wagon load traffic in a small yard during the mid 1970s .
Cornwallis Yard GWR - The work of the late Bob Haskins, Cornwallis Yard (left) represents a fictional section of the GWR’s Millbay branch in Plymouth circa 1935. The branch was famous as a rail head for Ocean Liner traffic, with the GWR providing boat trains between Plymouth and Paddington. On the upper level is part of Millbay Road Station and Cornwallis Yard goods depot. The lower level includes a small engine shed and a couple of carriage sidings.

The layout has been featured in many publications including Model Rail and the Hornby Magazine. It is based on Southern Region practice under British Rail in the late 1950s/60s also features a lot of land outside the railway boundary and the buildings and their settings are to be prominent features.
Dudley Road - A small light maintenance depot on the west side of Birmingham built on the remains of an old LMS engine shed / maintenance depot, now part of an industrial estate not far from the WCML now that the old signal box and control system has gone. Stock is late 1990's (Class 66, 37s, 57s etc).
Dovington Camp (left) Wartime BR - Dovington Camp was developed during WWII as an Army stores & training depot, with quite an extensive rail network. While this has been ‘rationalised’ over time but it still maintains a rail link for the movement of fuel, stores, munitions and, of course, a wide variety of military vehicles. The camp still retains an old MoD loco, or two, for shunting within the depot itself.
Goathland - Privately owned exhibition layout based on the The North Yorkshire Moors Railway where Goathland is its most recognisable station thanks to the filming of TV's 'Heartbeat' and the 'Harry Potter' films.
